John Troy moved from Alpharetta, Georgia to Bozeman, Montana in 1995 to attend Montana State University as a photography major. In the 16 years since then, he’s been traveling the state capturing images of the rapidly fading history of the early pioneers who first settled this area in the mid to late 1800’s. Montana is rich with remnants of this time period: old mining claims, primitive farm structures, and ghost towns.
These remnants are quickly being reclaimed by the very Earth that they were built upon, in fact many of these images represent structures that have since disappeared due to fire, land development, land owners who view the structures as insurance liability, and the burgeoning barn wood industry. The Forms of Neglect Project is an ongoing effort to document this history before it completely fades from view.
